Oct. 15, 2008

It's around 6:30pm and the debates are on, but I don't have a TV. So I kept the doors open and watched the sunset. I got so much hope it's Obama I don't need to watch no debate.

I'm in LA now and we've decided on a digital release. So I'm combining a few outtakes that were rolling around with the songs we started recording this past winter with Lij at the Toy Box. it's a different world now, and that means digital. I feel like albums are my kids, and if you take 100 pictures a day of your first child, and by the time you have a fourth, stick a fork in their hand and set em down next to an electrical socket, well, so it is for albums too. No photo sessions, just music. As always, we had a blast. Hope you can feel it. Enjoy!

Love,

Amy

some things are made to match
autumn leaves and a pumpkin patch
a wooden spoon and a cookie batch
we are peas and carrots

some things just go together
rubber boots and stormy weather
a gust of wind and a sparrow’s feather
we are peas and carrots

i don’t know what i would do without you
does it show i am crazy about you

some things just seem to click
a dancing flame on a candlestick
a mother hen and a baby chick
we are peas and carrots

some things are made for life
the solemn vows of a man and wife
side by side like a fork and knife
we are peas and carrots

i don’t know....

some things are meant to be
a little baby on a bouncing knee
can’t you see what you mean to me
we are peas you and me we are peas and carrots

he loves her with his brain
keepin himself from joy while he keeps them all from pain
and she loves him with her anger
can’t find beauty down inside so she buys it off a hanger
convincing us she loves her life
she told the town her husband kept her but she feels like his ex wife

and so they fit just like a glove
long on marriage short on love
she’ll be the one that he will keep
as long as his heart stays asleep

she fights hard the winds of fate
found a house with sturdy walls and began to decorate
her stubborn will is strong
but that’s not the kind of strength that keeps a ramblin’ man from wrong

it’s supposed to just make sense
it’s not some kind of life sentence
if you wanna leave her you better go
but don’t tell me things that i shouldn’t know

he loves her with his conscience
lingers off to dream awhile then goes back to makin sense
she loves him with her vengeance
she don’t believe in God but she believes in penance

Dave Jacques: bass
Will Kimbrough: guitars, vocals

John Deaderick: keyboards
Marc Pisapia: drums

it’s been a long time since my man sat and listened to me
somethin bout marriage keeps you from letting feelings show
so it’s nice to have you sittin here and lookin in my eyes
and it’s kind of you to ask me like you really want to know

and i really want to stay i really want to stay
so i better go

it’s been a long time since i’ve laughed and lightened up a little
i been workin so hard i have lost sight of my dreams
and every time i talk to you i’m reminded of a time
before i knew having it all isn’t what it seems

and i really want to stay i really want to stay
so i better go

and i know enough to know it’s more than just a ring
and i need to just stand up and do the right thing

i really want to stay i really want to stay
i really want to stay so i better go

4. Kings and Queens
written by Amy Loftus
live outtake from a Toy Box session

April 8, 2008
produced by Lij
Amy Loftus: acoustic guitar

pen to paper soul writes my life i just read the book at the day’s end
this life but a fleeting glance through a space in time around this bend

and if you haven’t figured it out kindness is the only thing that matters
if you haven’t figured it out kindness is the only thing that makes you royalty
just like you want to be kings and queens

a soul in motion indestruction nothing you can say could destroy me
i can look right in your eyes and know that you project all that you see

i am human prone to faults i must keep measure when i do a wrong
thank you but i’ll pass upon your list of my faults i find it too long

ooh i’m locked outta my own house baby inside husband too
ooh i’m locked outta my own life love inside comfort too
ooh i’m locked out of my own life starman says it’s what you choose ooooooohhhh

when i sat by the river and spoke your name
i promised i would never blame well i didn’t know that i’d be known
everywhere but in my home
home blows like seafoam wind as i roam always leaving town
home grasping for air it’s never there always looking around for home

ooh i’m locked out of my own life silver shoes i tied for you
ooh i’m locked out of my own house singing somewhere to you
oooh i’m locked out of my own life sleep will wake me dream comes true
ooooohhhh

they told you they told you they told you it wouldn’t be so easy
they told you they told you they told you it wouldn’t be so easy

ooooooh i’m locked outta my own house fall into a heap on the floor
ooh i’m locked outta my own house outta hope for what’s in store
oooh i need angels round me forgive me for wanting more

6 . Long Walk
written by Amy Loftus
produced by Will Kimbrough and Amy Loftus
recorded at The Creation Station July 2003
Will Kimbrough: all instruments

This is the first song I ever wrote by myself, in my little apartment in LA in 1999.

burned a lavendar fire smoked sage through the door
stained my walls with hard granite words i can’t read no more
painted buildings in gold faces still left unseen
slept a heart lonely cold waited for my starring scene

it’s been a long walk from here to there
and you realize the mountains don’t seem to care
it’s been a long walk from there to here
and you realize the valleys are what you hold dear
it’s been a long, long walk

spent a fortune on the wind wiped down wood through insults
found my spirit in your grin learned to detach from results
and walk the lane you love the most do what you absolutely must
do the thing that breaks your heart go beyond dressing the part

some things in life you don’t know how to feel
til then you don’t think you just know that it’s real
some things in life feel like they take so long
except for the time it takes inside a song
